MERANTI,
DARK RED
The
timber which is known as Dark Red Meranti in Peninsular Malaysia
and Sarawak, and as Obar Suluk in Sabah, is the product of mainly
S.curtisii, S.pauciflora (known locally in Peninsular Malaysia
as nemesu), S.platyclados, S.argentifolia, S.ovata, S.singkawang,
S.pachyphylla, S.acuminata (partly, S.hemsleyana (partly), S.macrantha
(partly), S.palembanica (partly), S.platycarpa (partly), and
S.leprosula (partly). Timbers of similar colour and structure
of other species of Shorea may be included under this name. The
timber is generally fairly fast drying and free from seasoning
defects.
General description of the wood:- Sapwood is not clearly defined from the heartwood
which is medium red to deep red to deep red-brown. The grain is interlocked.
The texture is moderately coarse and even.
