MERANTI,
YELLOW
The
timber which is known as Yellow Meranti in Peninsular Malaysia
and Sarawak, and as Yellow Seraya in Sabah, is the product of
several species of Shorea belonging to the Richetia group, the
most abundant of which are S.faquetiana, S.dolichocarpa, S.maxima,
S.longisperma, S.gibbosa, S.multiflora and S.hopeifolia. the
timber dries moderately slowly, with very little degrade, except
for some cupping, bowing and Powder-post beetle attacks in the
sapwood.
General description of the wood:- Sapwood is well-defined. The heartwood is light
yellow-brown with a green tinge, darkening to deeper shades of yellow-brown or
brown. The grain is interlocked and sometimes wavy. The texture is moderately
coarse and even.
